A CONVERSATION BETWEEN TWO ARTISTS AND A DESIGNER TRYING TO WORK ON A PROJECT ABOUT DESIGN - AND THE PROCESS BEHIND IT
by Ann-Kristin Stølan, Anna Thordal, Ingel Vaikla
Printed on Munken Lynx 100g/m2 in Black and Pantone 3265, set in Akzidenz grotesk
Section three asks us how we design a book if we don’t really know the first thing about design – a perfect place to start questioning how an artist book should be made. At first Ann-Kristin Stølan, Anna Thordal, and Ingel Vaikla were working in the spirit of the punk rock zine makers from the 80s whose crude, homemade aesthetics of photocopying, and cutting and pasting were a direct challenge to professionalized design. However, as a result they present us with their efforts to work through some possible responses to this question and to discuss the working processes in design and art as well as coming to terms with the differences in their practices (two are artists with no design experience, while the third is a designer).
